Rinspeed – Swiss automobile company – unveiled a self-driving concept car XchangE that can transform into a mobile office. The owners can spend much of their time on the road.
To create the car, designers of Rinspeed transformed a standard Tesla Model S sedan. The company showed how a driverless car might look and feel in the future.
Rinspeed founder Frank M. Rinderknecht explained that so far anyone hasn’t taken this to conclusion from the point of view of the driver. How to make the interior of a car that will provide the driver with optimal use of the gain in time?
In autonomous driving mode the steering wheel slides away and a desk is pulled out – there you can accommodate your laptops and other equipment.
In this mode the driver can swivel his legs and face the passenger. He can also try one of 20 possible seating positions, including a flat bed. The passengers have access to an entertainment system that is spread across four separate screens.
The concept has its own wireless 4G connection. Rinspeed believes it can be used to access cloud services: for instance, warning messages or recommendations en route etc.
The car equipped by a 1.2-metre-wide display on the dashboard that provides information – for example, distance to travel or remaining fuel. In the rear there is a 32-inch monitor that can be used to access films and TV with the help of gesture control.
The interior includes 358 individually controlled LEDs and an extra 98 in the instrument panel that gently light the cabin of the car. The seating and carpeting were developed by textile specialist Strähle+Hes. They are made of natural materials – silk and Merino wool.
